John Caldwell Holt (1923-85) is recognized by many as the father (some now even say grandfather!) of the modern homeschooling movement and the person who coined the term “unschooling.”
He was the author of ten books about education. In 1977, he founded Growing Without Schooling magazine as a way to support homeschooling families and to provide a forum for them to communicate with one another. Growing Without Schooling ceased publication at the end of 2001 after 143 issues. While subscriptions are no longer available, many of the back issues can still be purchased.
