Two fantastic programs for G5-6 students
Expedition to the M.A.R.S. Base
An immersive science experience. In Mission Control, they observe the astronauts working in the Mars Australian Research Station (M.A.R.S.), use interactive software to monitor systems and solve related problems.
In the M.A.R.S. Base, astronauts work in pairs to complete hands-on science tasks and communicate their results to Mission Control. The program delivers a scenario-based learning environment that engages the students in a wide range of science activities, uses computer and communications technology and strongly encourages collaborative learning and teamwork.
This session has a pre-visit project which must be completed. It can be viewed here, so that you can check the suitability for your child before booking https://sites.google.com/site/missiontomarsbaseatvssec/home/student-research-project
Static Electricity: Students use balloons and an assortment of common items (confetti, etc.) to explore the mysterious nature of electric charge. Building on their own past experience, students are introduced to the properties of static electricity. They then use their understanding to explain how a Van De Graff generator wand can make a Mylar fly.
Dancing Alien Robots :Students build a simple circuit which includes an electric motor. They use this as the heart of their own dancing alien robot
VSSEC offer aged based programs. Your child must fall within the specified grade range to enrol. The session will require kids to concentrate for four 1 hour sessions over the day, pay attention when the facilitators are giving instructions and explanations, and limit chatting. They will need to be confident to remain in the class with a HEN representative and 2-3 parent helpers. You may request to be one of the helpers, but places are not guaranteed. Please do not register children with behavioural challenges, life threatening allergies, or serious health conditions, as our parent helpers have no training in supporting these students. If you feel your child falls into this category, but would benefit from this excursion, please contact the event organiser (via Trybooking link) and we will see if it is possible to accommodate them.
The first class starts at 9.30 and parents should arrive by 9.15 to check in. There is limited onsite parking, so please allow enough time to park and walk if necessary. Children should bring morning and afternoon tea, and lunch. Please ensure that you are at the Centre promptly at 2.30 to collect your child.
This excursion is for HEN members and their immediate families only. You may only bring extra children if their parents are members, and you add their membership number. You can find your HEN number under Account Details when you are logged in to the website. Participants must be HEN members at the time of booking, and on the day of the event; you can check the expiry date of your membership in the Account Details section.
By making a booking you are agreeing to follow any Covid requirements as well as the HEN guidelines https://home-ed.vic.edu.au/guidelines-for-hen-event-attendees/
