All are welcome to the inaugural Melrose Family camp which we hope can become an annual event on the SA home education calendar.
For those who aren’t familiar, Melrose is a small and historic township at the foot of Mt Remarkable and its national park, on Nukunu Land in the Southern Flinders ranges.Home to the world renowned Over the Edge (OTE) bike store and cafe, which over the years have developed mountain bike (MTB) trails and host many events providing skills sessions, guided trail tours and more. https://otesports.com/locations/melrose/

The North Star hotel is also a local icon if anyone is looking for a night off cooking.

The caravan park has great amenities and is adjacent the town and bike trail head. There is also a pump track right in the middle in the creek bed allowing for endless practice for the kids.
An area has been allocated for us -some powered sites, some unpowered bush camping so when calling to book, just ask to be put in the Home Education Network area, which is next to the creek / pump track. the park is offering a 10% discount for bookings for our group.

Even without bikes there is plenty to do in the area – Alligator gorge is a short drive, there are numerous walks in the National park, and further afield are Port Augusta with the Arid lands botanic garden and Wadlata outback centre. Melrose Museum offers local history and the operator is now offering an after dark ghost walking tour (see below for booking details)
Other than that relax while the kids play, meet other parents and be inspired by peoples stories and enjoy the campfires and beautiful autumn sun.

Activities:

Mountain Biking:
So far I have tentatively scheduled the following mountain bike sessions with OTE –
Monday 16th May 10am-12pm Beginners skills and guided session on local trails. This would be for those who are new not necessarily to riding, but to off road/trail riding. Group size of 10 students will be $16 pp and requiring at least 2 parent teachers (FOC) to accompany.

Monday 16th May 10am-12pm Intermediate guided skills session- for those who have some experience with off road riding/ have participated in MTB training previously, or are self taught at a level to keep up with the group. 10 students again will be $16pp and will need 2 parent/teachers to accompany.

Tuesday 17th May in the same groups as Monday building on the previous days skills.

If there is enough interest there may be enough for a 1 hour skills sessions for the younger crowd which I can try to organise if there is interest. We would need 10 for $8pp, or less if people are prepared to pay more (rate is $80per hour) and once again 2 parents along.

After Dark Ghost tour – with local history guide from the Melrose Museum

This is a new event on offer, local history expert from Melrose Museum will take groups of up to 15 on a walking ghost tour of the town. Beginning at 8 pm Tuesday 17th May.

Pricing:
Family (2 adults and unlimited children) $50
Adult $25
Student $15
If you are interested choose to pay a deposit on the try booking form. If there is enough interest, he might be happy to do another one on Wednesday.
Campfire – in the interest of conserving fuel and enhancing community connection there will be one campfire each night unless there is a total fire ban. Please bring some wood to contribute. Wood should also be available to purchase from the park office. To save your place in these classes and events please pay on this try booking link.
