Make Your Own Tote Bag (Ages 12–18)

Learn the basics of sewing while creating your own tote bag to use at home! This beginner-friendly online workshop introduces young people to simple sewing techniques in a fun, creative, and practical way.

Participants will be guided step-by-step through measuring, stitching and assembling, their own tote bag using easy-to-follow methods suitable for beginners. Along the way, they’ll build confidence using sewing tools and learn skills they can continue using for future creative projects.

Activities include: * Learning basic sewing techniques

  • Practising stitching and fabric handling
  • Measuring, folding, and assembling fabric shapes
  • Designing and decorating a functional fabric box
  • Developing patience, creativity, and problem-solving skills

Sewing is a valuable life skill that supports creativity, focus, fine motor development, and independent learning. It also encourages sustainable making by helping young people repair, reuse, and create their own handmade items.

No sewing experience is required — beginners are very welcome.

What to Bring:

  • Sewing machine. (Check with your local library or a neighbour if you do not have one)
  • Scissors,
  • Pins,
  • Measuring tape,
  • Ruler,
  • Tailor chalk,
  • Large safety pin,
  • Iron Board,
  • 1/2 metre of outer fabric (Cotton Drill or Cotton Duck)
  • 1/2 metre lining fabric ( Homespun Cotton or other Cheap Cotton)
