Enter the world of Yayoi Kusama! Join an NGV educator in the Learn Studios for a brief introduction to Kusama’s artmaking practice and create your own moveable artwork inspired by the artist’s creative use of line, colour, shape, and pattern. Please note that UV lights will be activated for a brief part of this workshop.
An optional self-guided viewing of the exhibition is also available.
Kids will:
- Identify key elements in the work of Yayoi Kusama including her use of line, colour, shape and pattern
- Discuss themes and ideas present in select works by Kusama
- Produce an individual artwork inspired by ideas and themes evident in Kusama’s artwork
🧒👧🏾 This event is for children 8y-14y. Younger children are discouraged from participating in the workshop, & where possible families might consider taking younger siblings to the Children’s Gallery during the workshop, if older siblings can be supervised by another adult (e.g. family or friend).
⏰️🗓 10.45am arrival for an 11am start to the workshop & 12pm finish. The self-guided tour is booked in for 1pm (this may be flexible), & may take families one hour to enjoy.
💳💲 Ticket prices are as follows:
- Kids – workshop: $12 per child
- Kids – optional self-guided tour: $14 per child
- Adult – optional self-guided tour: $32 for the first adult, $35 for additional adults
- Adult – workshop & younger siblings under 5y: free
🎒👜 Large bags must be cloaked, & cloaking is currently limited due to renovations. Please pack light, & remember to also bring a smaller bag to carry essentials with you in the gallery.
🖼🎨 When considering the self-guided tour, please note the content warnings:
- The exhibition presents a series of immersive rooms which use mirrors, patterns and lighting effects. The spaces might present some challenges for students with sensory sensitivities.
- Please note that some artworks relate to themes of suicide, death, grief, mental illness, nudity and sexual themes. Each family may like to review Kusama’s work online to confirm works are suitable for your family.
👕🩴 Shirt & shoes required for entry to museum
💻👩🏫 This event follows a free online event, introducing Kusama to families. Please visit the HEN events page for more information.
