Learning through gaming or play can be a powerful method for understanding difficult concepts. In this design challenge, students will create an arcade game that demonstrates a STEM principle for a younger audience. Students will program custom games, design unique controllers and build cabinets that create an engaging experience.

During this program, students unpack STEM concepts and consider the importance of good scientific literacy. Students will also investigate the expansion of the video game industry and its STEM careers. Class discussions and participation in learning activities will provide insight into the fundamentals of good game design – game loops, core mechanics, immersion, challenge and interaction.

Students will then have the opportunity to create their own prototypes using a range of emerging technologies, including programming using MakeCode Arcade, 3D modelling, microcontrollers and digital design.

It is a requirement for participants to reside in the City of Whittlesea, City of Darebin, Hume City Council, Brimbank City Council or Mitchell Shire Council.

This is a free program that has been offered to us by the Whittlesea Tech School, however, please only book this program if you are certain you are able to commit to the program.

Adults can attend, but will need to have a valid Working With Children (WWC) Check card and be able to present this on the day.

To avoid disappointment, please do not book in younger children or they will not be allowed to participate in the program.
Alternative arrangements for younger siblings who are not participating in the program should be made.

The Tech School events have been organised by HEN volunteers, however, they are open to both HEN and non-HEN members.

Please be mindful of this when contacting the HEN organiser on the day of the event. All enquiries should be made before the event.

Please do not contact the Whittlesea Tech School directly, all questions should be addressed to excursions@home-ed.vic.edu.au.
