The Size of Your Sol Program gives students a realistic feel for the relative sizes of the Sun and planets and for their orbits compared with their diameters as they actually are on the day of the program.
This program gives students a realistic feel for the relative sizes of the Sun and planets and for their orbits compared with their diameters.
An 8 metre diameter star is laid out as a representation of the Sun. Students use sets of planets scaled to match to work out how many times each planet fits across the face of the Sun. They use counting, multiplication, addition and ratios to compare the size of the Sun and orbits around planets.
Students will be asked to represent the orbital radii of the planets by ordering and placing them along number lines which extend out from the Sun in the centre to Neptune, the furthest planet. They will order numbers, estimate positions along the number line and learn to understand the slowly-changing positions of the Earth and other planets.
Students are able to observe the relative positions of the planets around the Sun as they actually are on the day of the program.

For students in Grade 5-6.
Victorian Space Science Education Centre (VSSEC) welcome home educated students, but require us to follow the rules for school groups.
A very limited number of parents are able to attend on the day. You can offer to be one of the helpers, but should only purchase a tickets for students who are confident to attend unaccompanied.
The 2-3 parents attending are expected to help/supervise like school teachers.
They do not have training or experience in dealing with health or behavioural issues, so please only purchase a ticket if you are confident
that your child will not require more supervision/care than the average.
Please ensure your child is at the venue by 9.15am. The program will start at 9.30am SHARP!
We must enter together, students who are late may not be able to join the class.
HEN events are all organised by volunteers, please be mindful of this when contacting the organiser and on the day of the event.
