HEN @ VSSEC What are Stars? Program VCE Physics (Strathmore)

When

18/06/2024
9:30 am-2:45 pm

Event Type

A full day program which assists students to understand our place in the solar system, our galaxy and the universe.

They explore how these systems began, evolved over time and will appear in future. By investigating stars — the most visible celestial bodies known to us — we can begin to understand our place in the universe.

This program includes pre-visit material that introduces students to the topic, a student workbook which provides teachers with an assessment package containing the results of the students’ activities. Students consider measurement techniques that quantify stars’ EM spectra and their astronomical distance. We look back into the past to recognise the genesis of different types of stars, their life cycles and the role of nuclear fusion in creating “stuff”. Students collect information using simulation software (which utilises the Hippocras Star Catalogue, containing information on over 125,000 stars) to create a Hertzprung-Russell diagram.

$22 per child

For VCE students

Students MUST have completed equivalent Year 10 Physics Units.

Minimum 10 students / Maximum 24 children
